Calories to Lose Weight - A Food Journal is the Key to Success

The only way to effectively lose weight is to work off more calories than you eat. So counting calories to lose weight can be effective, but only if you exercise. If you eat an average of 2000 calories a day, you need to exercise for a solid hour to offset the calories you took into your body and lose weight. It is quite conceivable that you can lose weight if you eat 6000 calories a day, but know that you'll need to exercise for three full hours a day in order to make that happen. Without meaning to sound rude, if you are eating 6000 calories a day you are probably not motivated enough to work out for three hours at a time, every single day.

So, the first step in counting calories to lose weight is to figure out how many calories a day you eat. Start by making a food journal. It is important to not cheat when you write in your food journal. The reason is if you lie to yourself, you will not lose the weight. No one else has to see the journal! Start a weekend when you will be able to really keep track because details are important. If you wake up and have a banana, a chocolate doughnut, and two cups of coffee with sugar and cream, you need to write that all down. If it's a medium sized banana, write down medium sized. Write down the size of the doughnut and if it had sprinkles on it. You probably used a kitchen spoon for the sugar which is approximately the size of a tablespoon. Write down the piece of gum you chewed. The handful of grapes you munched on and the candy bar you had. Do this for a week, every day.

Now start figuring out how many calories your are averaging every day. Keeping track of calories to lose weight will enable you to figure out how much exercise you need to offset what you are eating. The average amount of calories a person eats a day is about 2,000. If you eat more or less you'll need to adjust the amount of exercise you are doing. If you are burning more calories than you eating, you will lose weight. It's not a quick and easy battle, but losing weight this way is healthy and will enable you to keep the weight off long term.
